As the fastest growing metro area in the nation, the City of Grand Rapids has been working to provide solutions to its parking demand. The City sought to explore alternative options to a traditional parking structure for a surface lot next to the Ryerson Library. Fishbeck teamed with Carl Walker, Inc. to provide the City bold and visionary design ideas that focused on mixed-use opportunities, sustainability, sensitivity to the existing library, and activating the public street. Taking this notion to heart, the resulting concepts function primarily as a contribution to the neighborhood and secondarily, as a parking structure.
The renovation and addition is designed to provide an environment that supports and promotes active learning and experiential problem-solving while providing a high degree of visibility for the workforce training labs and IT curriculum. Student collaboration/study spaces are strategically placed throughout the building and serve to transform circulation elements into vital building features.
