Corewell Health | Butterworth Hospital South Employee Parking Structure

Corewell Health | Butterworth Hospital South Employee Parking Structure

This 7-level, 989-space parking structure replaced the existing parking structure and provides additional employee parking for Corewell Health’s Butterworth campus. The existing parking structure was at the end of its useful life but housed critical emergency power infrastructure that needed to remain functional. The existing structure was selectively demolished while the portion housing the critical infrastructure was retrofitted to remain; this necessitated careful structural coordination with construction phasing.

The new structure is constructed of cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete and includes a roof designed to house a future photovoltaic array. Electric vehicle charging stations were installed as an additional sustainability feature. Vehicular circulation is via speed ramps with all parking on non-ramped floors.

To maximize parking, the new structure clear spans over the top of the remaining portion of existing structure. The clear span was accomplished by using 75-foot, long-span precast double tee beams supported on cast-in-place concrete girders, which avoided any shoring on top of the of original structure.

The façade features precast concrete walls and spandrels with security fencing infill. The lower levels form an architectural plinth with brick masonry, a combination of
cut brick cast into the precast and field placed brick, consistent with the campus style. The precast spandrels at upper levels are constructed of colored concrete and have
a random arrangement of three distinct textures.

The structure is constructed tight to property lines and adjacent to existing foundations, which required mixing foundation types depending on available space and structural loads. A high strength concrete mix was also employed to limit the size of select foundation elements.

Fishbeck provided prime project management along with full-service architecture and engineering design for Pioneer Construction, the construction manager.
