Lakewood Wastewater Authority | Phase II Collection System Improvements

Lakewood Wastewater Authority | Phase II Collection System Improvements

Fishbeck assisted the Lakewood Wastewater Authority with three major collection system projects: Pump Station 11 and 16 Improvements, Huddle Road Force Main Replacement, and Gravity Interceptor Sewer. Pump Station 11 and 16 Improvements increased the pumping capacity at two critical pump stations to handle wet weather flows in the collection system. The Huddle Road Force Main project provided higher flow capacity in the force main on the discharge of Pump Station 16. The Gravity Interceptor Sewer project increased the overall hydraulic capacity of the collection system and eliminated hydraulic restrictions. In addition to these three major projects, this phase of system improvements included WWTP and general pump station upgrades.
Pump Station 11 included a new wet well, pumps, controls, building, site piping, and standby generator. Pump Station 16 involved upgrading three existing motors to 100 horsepower, installing a fourth 100 horsepower pump, and new controls panels.
The Gravity Interceptor Sewer project included the installation of 6,000 feet of 15-inch diameter gravity sewer. This project provided major changes to the collection system strategy by eliminating repeated repumping of wastewater from small collection system pump stations and eliminating hydraulic restrictions in the existing collection system piping. The implementation of the gravity interceptor sewer eliminated sanitary sewer overflows that were common at Pump Station 11 in Woodland and at other hydraulic restrictions in pump station force main piping. An important component of the project was construction of an aerial crossing of Tupper Creek along the State Highway M-50 portion of the route. This aerial crossing eliminated the need for an additional pump station in the system.
The combined system improvements eliminated long standing problem of system overflows and improved the overall reliability of the system. Fishbeck worked closely with the Lakewood Wastewater Authority and USDA — Rural Development to secure funding that was instrumental to completing these major infrastructure projects in this relatively small system of approximately 1,400 users.
