Miami University | Central Quad HV Electrical Conversion

Miami University | Central Quad HV Electrical Conversion

This project replaced a 5kV switch in an existing vault with a new 15kV switch, replaced electrical substations/services at three buildings, replaced 5kV feeds to three other buildings with 15kV feeders, and replaced other 5kV underground distribution with 15kV on the Central Quad of the campus. A second part of the project involved replacing the substations within Irvin Hall and Hall Auditorium. The work done on each building was performed sequentially on different weekends to minimize disruption. A separate procurement package was provided for equipment substations to allow for quicker contractor installation over the summer. A third major component of this project involved replacing existing 5kV switches in a vault. The new 15kV switch was fit into the vault on a platform while the existing 5kW switches were in service. This allowed quicker transition of existing cables from the 5kV switches to the new 15kV switch. All work requiring downtime was coordinated to minimize effects to building occupants, and the project was completed on time and under budget.
