Michigan State University | Farm Lane over Red Cedar Bridge Replacement

Michigan State University | Farm Lane over Red Cedar Bridge Replacement

Fishbeck designed a single-span bridge that replaces the existing three span bridge that included multiple bridge types, including variable haunch concrete beams, structural steel beams, and prestressed concrete box beams. As part of this bridge replacement, Fishbeck designed a permanent pedestrian bridge parallel to and west of the Farm Lane bridge to maintain student traffic during construction; the north abutments were integrated with a retaining wall parallel to a nonmotorized path along the bank of the Red Cedar River.
The Farm Lane bridge deck section includes 15-foot sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides of the vehicular lanes. Fishbeck’s architectural department produced plans to incorporate brick and limestone façades on brick ledges provided on various pilasters and the abutments designed by Fishbeck’s bridge designers.
Additionally, Fishbeck electrical engineers specified Gothic light standards and light fixtures matching MSU historical features on surrounding buildings, including the auditorium.
